My "Hey, I'm Kind Of Super Into You" Mixtape

Thursday, February 09, 2012

Well, I suppose technically in this day and age, it would be more of a playlist or a mix CD, but it's still a mixtape in my heart. Mixtapes were kind of the thing kids of the 90s did (although making them for someone was something kids older than me did). I remember in 5th grade, I decided to make a New Year's Eve mixtape, and spent like two hours with my boombox up against the TV speakers while Pop-Up Video was on.

It was pretty epic.

But anyway, back to the mix. Everyone, at some point in time, has feelings for another person. It's just human nature. I've put together a mix of songs that will put your feelings out there, a way to say "Hey there, other person. I really like you and I think we should be two people who are together."

Just a warning? This playlist isn't very subtle. This is the kind of thing you give someone when you want your feelings to be blatantly known. Also, these are not in any particular order.

1.) Hellogoodbye - Dear Jamie...Sincerely Me

This is an awesome song about trying to put your feelings into words. The music is so pretty. Hellogoodbye is just golden. I love them.

2.) Michael Jackson - P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

This is a fun, danceable song about being into someone. And it's highly complimentary. Who wouldn't like to think that someone thinks of them as a PYT?

I also really like the Glee version, sung by Kevin McHale and Harry Shum Jr. (Artie and Mike). It's on one of the mixes I listen to in the car on my way to work :)

3.) ABBA - Take A Chance On Me

This song pretty much screams "PICK ME! PICK ME!", and that's kind of awesome. And I think it's encoded in our DNA that listening to ABBA automatically makes us happier. It's just a fact of life.

4.) Ben Lee - Ache For You

This song is kind of special to me, because it always makes me think of Tom. He burned me a mix kind of like this one to give to me on our second date, and this was on it. It's an absolutely beautiful song about yearning. Plus Ben Lee is kind of adorable.

5.) Dashboard Confessional - Stolen

I'm a huge Dashboard fan, and this song is no exception. If the lyric "you have stolen my heart" doesn't get your point across, I don't know what will.

6.) Fall Out Boy - Pretty In Punk

This is old school Fall Out Boy (which is my favorite kind of Fall Out Boy, by the way, but I digress). This song is based on Pretty In Pink, which is an amazing movie. It captures the nervous feeling of being near the person you really like and feeling like they don't know you exist (Lord knows I've been there plenty of times...)

7.) Bloc Party - I Still Remember

This song is about all the little moments you notice at the beginning stages of a crush, like when your hands almost brush. You always remember the little things <3

8.) Old 97's - Question

So this song is really probably about proposing, but it could work for asking someone out too. It's a very sweet song, and I enjoy Rhett Miller's voice.

9.) Weezer - Falling For You

Okay, so Weezer is my favorite band, and Pinkerton just happens to be my favorite album of all time, but even if those things were not true, I would still include this song on the list. This song is about realizing your feelings are deeper than you thought, being a little frightened by those feelings and then realizing that maybe they aren't so scary after all. Rivers Cuomo is such a genius, y'all.

10.) Tegan and Sara - Take Me Anywhere

Behind its peppy beat, this song always makes me think of silent desperation, like needing someone to want you as badly as you need them. Plus Tegan and Sara are super talented.

11.) Taylor Swift - Enchanted

Remember that first blush of infatuation? Taylor Swift captures that perfectly in this song. It kind of just makes you want to put on a tutu and twirl around your room. (Oh, is that just me?)

12.) The Summer Set - Lights

So this song is actually a love letter to fans, but I think it works well for someone you're crushing on too. It makes me think of that stage in a budding relationship where you want things to slow down because you're afraid it will all pass you by, but you don't want it to go too slow because you just want to be with the person constantly.

13.) Selena Gomez & The Scene - Naturally

Like number 4, this one has special meaning for our relationship too, because this one was on the mix I gave him on our second date. No, it's not Tom's style of music, but it described how I was feeling, and he agreed with the song's sentiment.

14.) Jonas Brothers - Love Bug

This song is all about being caught up in the first throes of love, when you're just so completely taken by the object of your affection that you can't think of anything else (and if I recall correctly, I think this one was on that mix too...)

15.) Goo Goo Dolls - Slide

This is one of my very favorite 90's songs.

16.) David Archuleta - Crush

This song is about wondering if anything will come out of a crush. You know you've been there. Also, it's kind of fun to sing along with.

17.) Come Away With Me - Norah Jones

This is a beautiful song about wanting to run off with the person you love.

18.) The Cranberries - Dreams

This song is about realizing you're into someone, and all the things you dream about happening with that person.

19.) Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me

Well, the title's pretty self-explanatory. Also Cheap Trick is amazing. My dad got me tickets to see me for my 16th birthday, but we had to go late and I missed them playing this song. I was completely distraught. So my dad said he'd get me tickets to see them again. I'm hoping it happens sometime before they're dead.

20.) The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)

Who wouldn't want someone to tell them that they would walk 1,000 miles for them? This song is so upbeat, and the sentiment is perfect. Plus it's always fun to yell the "DA-DA-DA-DA-DA" parts.

Happy listening!
