Lovely Lighting Options

Monday, July 09, 2012

So I'm sorry there was no Scavenger Hunt Sunday post, but we were out of town a lot of this weekend and I just wanted a chance to relax and enjoy the company of good friends.

But anyway, today, I want to talk about lighting.

Now I realize that for a lot of people, lighting is a bit of an afterthought for a lot of people, but I think a fabulous pendant lamp or chandelier could be the focal point of a room (and just a warning now -- a lot of the lighting options I show you will be pendant lamps, because I'm kind of obsessed with them).  Here are a few of my favorites (apparently I have expensive tastes in lighting...oops...).

From Pottery Barn:

I have been completely obsessed with this pendant since I first saw it (in fact, it was one of the first things I ever pinned).  I think I would either love to have this in a dining room or above a kitchen island.  It's just so cool.  And the best part?  I think that just maybe, with a little help from my Gramps, this is something I could possibly DIY.  That would be preferable, because it would save me hundreds.  And you all know I like to save money.

I think this pendant is so cool, and I love that it has blown glass (glass blowing is always something that has fascinated me -- if you ever get a chance to visit the Indianapolis Children's Museum, which has been named one of the best in the world, and get to see the Dale Chihuly-created Fireworks of Glass, I highly recommend it.  It's so neat).  I would like this outdoors or in an entryway, and maybe even in a library (because I totally want a library).

From IKEA:

I love this pendant, as mentioned in my bedroom plans (which have since changed).  It's so much more impressive in person.  This would be great in a bedroom, dining room, living room -- lots of rooms, really.  It's so fun and different; it's modern yet retro, and I like that.

From Crate & Barrel:

This reminds me of chicken wire, and I love it.  I think it would be great in an office, entryway, or breakfast nook.  It's simplistic but still interesting.

From Pier 1:

I'm not usually super into floor lamps (I tend to think they're a waste of valuable square footage), but I like the sleek look of this one.  The bamboo-inspired stand and snakeskin-print shade are something different than you usually see.

From Z Gallerie:

I think this chandelier is so cool. And maybe the coolest part? The links are interchangeable, so you can reconfigure it to suit your tastes.  How cool is that?  Pretty freaking cool, if you ask me (and I'm assuming you are, since you're on my blog).

This has both a fresh look and a mid-century modern feel, which makes it kind of cool.  I think it would be especially great in a dining room, breakfast nook, office or craft room.  I do think you need to be mindful of the furniture you pair it with though.

Literally nothing about this seems like a chandelier to me, but I sure do like it.  It's got a great stark simplicity that almost catches you off guard after all the others I've mentioned.  I actually think this would be great on a front porch, but I worry about the elements (perhaps more than I should) ruining it.  I think it would be perfect for an entryway.

So there's a little insight into my design aesthetic (which is, admittedly, a bit all over the place).  I think it will be interesting to see how I actually do decorate when we're able to buy our own house.
