31 Days to Surviving NaNoWriMo - Make Some Space

To write in, that is.

You need a writing space (though it's okay to have a writing sesh or two at a coffee house...it can renew your creativity!).

So what should you look for?

-It needs to be free from distractions.  No TV is good (unless you need TV background noise, though music makes better background noise in my humble opinion).  Away from the kitchen is good too, because otherwise you might be tempted to be taking a few too many snack breaks.  Some wrimos are so desperate to escape the distractions of their homes that they set up camp in their garden sheds!

-It needs to be comfortable.  If you're not comfortable, you're not going to be able to focus on your writing.  Period.  This means you need to be able to have a comfortable temperature, a comfortable environment (no gaping holes in the wall if that's not your things), a writing surface at a comfortable height, and, perhaps most importantly, a comfortable chair.  Lumbar support is serious business, folks!

-Some place inspiring helps, but isn't necessary.  Some people might love working in a room full of stark white walls (the whole "blank canvas" thing and all), but some people would go batty in a room like that.  Pastels can be nice and soothing, but brighter colors can be energizing and stir up creativity.  It's all a matter of personal preference.

-Try to position your computer so that there won't be glare from anything on it.  Glare blows.

-Homey touches can be nice.  Throw blankets are FANTASTIC.  Bringing in a plant could promote a soothing environment.  A nice pot of tea never hurts either ;)

What things do you like to have in your writing environment?
