Memorial Day -- It's More Than A Day Off Work

Monday, May 27, 2013

For many people, Memorial Day conjures up thoughts of a day off work spent grilling out, cracking open a few beers, and hanging out with friends.

And that's okay. But the problem is that we forget the entire point of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day isn't about a three day weekend, or burgers, or Budweiser. It's about this:

It's about the men and women who die protecting and fighting for our country in the US military.

It's easy to not think about it, and I don't think that's a good thing. I feel like every American citizen should visit Arlington National Cemetery at least once in their lives. It may seem like we don't lose that many soldiers, because it's not on the news often, but Arlington helps put in perspective. Granted, not every soldier is buried there, and the ones that are represent several different conflicts (and likely times of peace as well), but the sheer number of small white headstones with flags next to them is overwhelming. We went while on a band trip to DC my freshman year of high school, and when I saw all the soldiers' graves, I started crying. It's hard not to. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is also a very sobering experience.

So while you're enjoying your hot dog (and maybe a margarita!), take a moment to silently thank those who never made it home.

Have a happy (and safe!) Memorial Day!

  1. I love what you wrote! Just like with Christmas, Easter & all other holidays, we're brought up to shop, eat, spend and have fun but no one really talks about why there is a holiday. I think it's great to remind people to stop and remember why they have a day off today and what they are even celebrating. Thanks for writing this, it's so very important!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way! And I'll admit -- even I can get caught up in Christmas (I'm a sucker for decorating), but I never forget what Christmas actually is.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I read and respond to each and every one. Thank you so much!
