Guest Post: Hidden Houston
Monday, July 01, 2013Hey guys! My vacation is coming to an end (we're heading back to Indiana from Oklahoma today), and I can't wait to tell you all about it! Since I can't tell you about Houston (or Dallas or OKC) right now, Brenda from TotallyBrenda (a former Houston resident) wanted to tell you about a few things you might enjoy in Houston that are a bit off the beaten path :) -Alex
Hey Good Girl Gone Wife readers. When I realized Alex was coming to Texas and needed guest bloggers I jumped on it. I love reading her blog and obvi you do too. It’s nice to “meet” you. Let me introduce myself: I’m Brenda, a late (clears throat) 20 something blogger at TotallyBrenda. I blog about random life happenings and am now in the process of chronicling our new adventures in DFW. I’m not a newly wed but am certainly a happy wed with 2 furbabies that I call the stinks (Peanut and Lola). I used to live in Houston and thought it would be PERFECT to share a couple unexpected places to visit in the area. Sure there are the favorites like Galleria, NASA, The Houston Zoo, etc. However the hubby and I like to do offbeat things every now and then.
During our quest to explore Houston, one quirky thing I found was the Star Spangled Banana. It took us a long time to find it because it’s in a random place. The Star Spangled Banana was actually installed in the wrong location but they were given the okay to leave it at the property by the owner.
Isn’t it freaking awesome and random? The artist, David Adickes is the mastermind behind this work of art. If you are interested in going the official address is 100 Quitman but it’s really on Wrightwood Street right next to I45/North Freeway (in/near The Heights). It’s a bummer that it’s fenced and can’t take a picture with it-but nonetheless it’s a hoot to see!
Not far away you find a truly hidden gemstone by the same artist, Adickes SculpturWorx Studio. It’s next to Target in the Heights and has many amazing sculptures of presidents and The Beatles. It is a private property, but the artist encourages people to come and see his magnificent work of art. Going there also makes you realize that you probably didn’t pay enough attention in elementary and forgot some of the presidents’ names. Or was that just me? But I digress, Adickes’ work is simply breathtaking. It’s not a super big location, but it’s great for some photo ops. Once you’re done you can pop into Target and have some Starbucks or have some quick treat nearby. You can also see a recreation of Mount Rushmore (Mount Rush Hour) when driving through I10 (Katy Freeway) or I45 (North Freeway).
Houston has so many great places to visit for everyone taste. You’ll be sure to enjoy your time in Space City. I hope you enjoyed a little peek into Houston through TotallyBrenda’s eyes. :) I’m off to discover what to do in North Texas because I’m a totally newbie here. Hope to “see” you soon.
